Dog trekking

Q. What is dog trekking?

A. It is the action to go hiking with a backpack on foot with your dog, it can be a few hour, a day or a few days long. 

It is important that you and your dog to be healthy and active before starting on long day trekking, be aware of the length of the trail and also keep an eye on the weather before going for your hike. If you are concern for yourself please check with your doctor and also check with your vet for your dog. This is really a good thing to do.

Q. What will you need for this sport?

A. A canicross belt, a line, poop bags, a water bottle, a portable dog bowl, a good pair of running shoes or hiking boots, walking stick and if you are planning for long excursion your back-pack (pack everything for your overnight stay for you and the dogs). Dress appropriately for the weather. Your dog could also carry a backpack but don’t forget to train him. A few month in advance you could start adding weight in his pack a little at a time. Don’t forget don’t put important stuff in your dog backpack like car keys or your ID because if your dog get lost guess what? 

Q. What your dog will need for this sport?

A. Your dog will need a harness, a collar with an identification medal with the info if he get lost. During winter, dog boots, a coat

Q. What type of training you and your dog will need for this sport?

A.Minimal training is needed, but people really enjoy having a dog that have basic obedience training especially if you will let the dog loose you will need to have a good recall. It is important to have a good recall for safety reason. If you enjoy walking, hiking and visit places, you will enjoy trekking. always respect the on leash policy while trekking.

Q. What breed of dog can do this sport?

A. Any breed, any dog that love to walk 

Q. What size of dog can do this sport?

AAny size dog can do trekking. Don’t forget to respect your dog rhythm.
Q. When can a dog start doing joring sport?

A.  It depend on the breed of the dog. Every breed/dog is different, it is hard to say for sure, dogs don’t come with a label. The larger they are the longer the growth plate will take to end their growth therefore it will take longer to start joring sport. The smaller they are the faster their growth plate will reach their growth. The best is to wait until the plates have finished their growth. If you are not sure, ask your vet.

Important!! For the human and for the dog. The human should be seen by a doctor prior starting an exercise program, ask him if the program will be appropriate for you. Same thing with your dog. You should see the vet about the new exercise program that you will be starting with your dog to know if it will be appropriate.
